Director Fede Álvarez thrilled fans with a nightmarish preview of the upcoming sequel’s facehugger. The reveal coincides with the 45th anniversary of the original Alien, which is receiving a limited theatrical re-release.
While audiences can revisit Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece on the big screen, Alien: Romulus promises a fresh encounter with the terrifying Xenomorph species this summer.
Álvarez, at the helm of Alien: Romulus, marked Alien Day by unveiling a video showcasing his film’s new facehugger in action. For years, April 26th has been unofficially recognized as “Alien Day,” commemorating the planetoid LV-426 where Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and her crew first encountered the Xenomorph in the original film.
The new installment, Alien: Romulus, is slated to arrive in August. In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, Álvarez discussed his decision to involve members of the original crew from both Alien and Aliens for designing new iterations of the Xenomorphs.
“We’re utilizing classic techniques like puppeteering and animatronics,” Álvarez told EW in March. “We had the right people on board because they worked on the originals. For some creatures, we needed their expertise to meticulously recreate the familiar look. But when something new was required, they were there as well, ensuring we stay true to the spirit of the original films.”
The new video offers a chilling glimpse of one such new creation: the facehugger. This alien parasite latches onto a human host, implanting an embryo that later bursts from the chest as a full-grown Xenomorph.
“Playing with my favorite toy on the set of #AlienRomulus last summer,” wrote Álvarez in his tweet. “RC Facehugger created by the amazing team from @wetaworkshop. Happy #AlienDay everyone!”
Alien: Romulus prepares to terrify audiences when it hits theaters on August 16, 2024.
