Blade Runner 2099, is set to commence filming in June 2024, with locations confirmed in both Prague and Spain. Production will run until December, continuing the legendary Blade Runner saga with the esteemed Michelle Yeoh leading the cast. Initially greenlit in late summer 2022, the series finally begins nearly two years later.
Michelle Yeoh, an Academy Award-winning actress known for her roles in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Star Trek: Discovery, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will helm the ensemble, marking a pivotal moment for both fans and newcomers. Her involvement brings significant prestige and excitement to the project. Visionary Ridley Scott returns as producer, ensuring the series remains true to the franchise’s roots while exploring new horizons. Scott directed the original 1982 film and produced its critically acclaimed sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
Silka Luisa, known for her work on Shining Girls and producing credits on Strange Angel and Halo, takes on the role of showrunner, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to the dystopian world of Blade Runner. Jonathan van Tulleken, who directed the first two episodes of FX’s Shogun, will helm the series’ initial episodes, stepping in after Jeremy Podeswa of Game of Thrones fame had to step down due to scheduling conflicts.
Michael Green, co-writer of Blade Runner 2049 and co-creator of Netflix’s hit series Blue Eye Samurai, serves as executive producer, ensuring continuity in storytelling. Set fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, the series is shrouded in mystery, promising to delve deeper into the philosophical and ethical questions that have defined the Blade Runner saga, exploring new facets of human and replicant coexistence in a future society.
