The six-episode spinoff of US hit ‘Citadel’ is set in a near-future Milan in 2030, eight years after the global spy agency Citadel was dismantled by Manticore, a shadowy organization manipulating world affairs. It follows the gripping journey of Diana Cavalieri (Matilda De Angelis), a Citadel agent who has been operating as a mole within the powerful Manticore syndicate. Diana is trapped behind enemy lines, yet she sees a chance to escape and disappear for good. But, her only option requires trusting an unlikely ally: Edo Zani (Lorenzo Cervasio), the heir to Manticore Italy and son of the syndicate’s leader, Ettore Zani (Maurizio Lombardi), who is engaged in a power struggle with other European crime families.

Matilda De Angelis stars in the titular role of Diana Cavalieri. De Angelis has gained international recognition for her versatile acting skills, with a standout performance in HBO’s thriller drama ‘The Undoing,’ where she starred alongside Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. In addition to this, she has made a significant impact in historical dramas, including the 2021 series ‘Leonardo,’ where she took on the role of Caterina da Cremona, bringing to life a lesser-known chapter of Leonardo da Vinci’s story. More recently, De Angelis starred in ‘The Law According to Lidia Poët’ (2023), a gripping portrayal of Italy’s first female lawyer, where she embodied the strength and determination of the trailblazing character. With her experience in playing multifaceted and strong female leads, De Angelis is set to bring depth and intensity to her role in ‘Citadel: Diana.’

“Citadel: Diana” is part of the broader “Citadel” universe, which began with the American spy series starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra as agents Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh. Launched in April 2023, the series was designed to be a springboard for multiple interconnected international shows. Alongside “Citadel: Diana,” an Indian spin-off titled “Citadel: Honey Bunny” is also in production.

Building a cinematic universe is a challenging feat, as seen in many Hollywood endeavors outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, the Russo Brothers are attempting to expand this universe with “Citadel” on Prime Video, starting with the high-stakes drama of “Citadel: Diana.” Here’s hoping the series lives up to the hype.

“Citadel: Diana” premieres on Prime Video on October 10. Watch the new trailer below.
