Shhh, watch the new trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One.
The chilling world of A Quiet Place expands in Day One, a gripping prequel that explores the terrifying onset of the alien invasion in New York City. The film delves into the raw human experience amidst chaos, with Lupita Nyong’o delivering a powerful performance as a terminally ill woman fighting for survival.
In the movie we are introduced us Samira, a cancer patient, residing in a hospice near New York City with her cat, Frodo. Sam’s life takes a dramatic turn when extraterrestrial creatures invade the city. The plot unfolds with Sam joining a group outing to Manhattan, only to find herself amidst the chaos of the invasion.
Sam awakens in a puppet theater, surrounded by survivors who must stay silent to avoid the alien threat. As the city’s infrastructure collapses, the survivors face escalating dangers, from panic-induced deaths to alien attacks triggered by the noise.
The story navigates through intense moments, including a failed rescue attempt, the struggle for medication, and the emotional bond between Sam and a law student named Eric. The duo’s journey is marked by acts of courage and sacrifice, leading to a poignant climax where Sam diverts the creatures to ensure Eric and Frodo’s escape.
The film’s journey began in November 2020, with Jeff Nichols initially on board to write and direct. Despite a completed script by May 2021, Nichols departed the project in October due to creative differences.
Enter Michael Sarnoski, who was handpicked by Krasinski in January 2022, inspired by Sarnoski’s critically acclaimed indie film Pig. Sarnoski brought a fresh vision, drawing inspiration from the dystopian classic Children of Men.
Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn joined the cast in November 2022, with Nyong’o overcoming a personal fear of cats to share the screen with her feline co-star, Frodo. Alex Wolff, a familiar face from Pig, and Djimon Hounsou, reprising his role from A Quiet Place Part II, rounded out the talented ensemble.
Principal photography took place in London from February to April 2023. The production transformed Warner Bros. Studios into a convincing replica of New York City, with meticulous set designs and innovative use of digital tools to visualize scenes.
A Quiet Place: Day One premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 26, 2024, captivating audiences before its wide release on June 28, opening strongly, grossing $53 million in its first weekend in North America, with a worldwide total reaching $98 million by the end of June.
Critics have praised the film’s suspenseful narrative and standout performances, particularly highlighting the chemistry between Nyong’o and Quinn. Rotten Tomatoes reported an 84% approval rating, while Metacritic’s score of 68 indicated generally favorable reviews.
