In ‘Omni Loop’, Time Is Both a Gift and a Curse in Bernardo Britto’s Sci-Fi Drama

Omni Loop is more than just a time-bending narrative; it’s a heartfelt meditation on loss, and acceptance. Watch the trailer below.

Starring Mary-Louise Parker alongside Ayo Edebiri, Britto’s film challenges conventional storytelling in dealing with the weight of choices, and the relentless passage of life.

Having premiered at the South by Southwest festival on March 13, 2024, and subsequently released in theaters by Magnolia Pictures on September 20, 2024, Omni Loop fuses elements of magical realism with the stark realities of life’s journey.

Omni Loop follows Zoya Lowe, a 55-year-old quantum physicist portrayed by Parker, who finds herself ensnared in a unique time loop. Diagnosed with a black hole growing in her chest, she learns she has only one week left to live. Yet, Zoya possesses a curious power: a mysterious bottle of pills discovered in her youth enables her to relive that final week indefinitely. Each pill sends her back five days, a power she once used to enhance her life but now desperately takes to avoid her fate.

As Zoya becomes increasingly disillusioned with her repetitive existence, she encounters Paula, a graduate student played by Edebiri, whose research on time provides a fresh perspective. Together, they embark on an exploration of the pills, seeking a way for Zoya to travel back even further to change her past. The film navigates themes of regret, the pressure of societal expectations—particularly those placed on women in the era of ‘second-wave feminism’—and the quest for self-fulfillment.

The screenplay for Omni Loop was selected for the 2017 Sundance Institute Screenwriting Lab, showcasing Britto’s visionary storytelling early on. With additional finishing funds for post-production provided by Amazon Studios (now Amazon MGM Studios) and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, the film was shot in Miami in September 2022, adding a vibrant backdrop to its existential narrative.

Since its debut, Omni Loop has been met with mostly positive reviews, reflected in an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 31 critics, with an average score of 6.7/10. Metacritic also reflects favorable sentiments, assigning the film a score of 68 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.
