With just over a month until the highly anticipated premiere of The Last of Us Season 2, attendees at the series’ SXSW panel were treated to an intense new trailer (watch below).
The footage sets an ominous tone, offering a glimpse into the brewing turmoil that will disrupt the relative calm of the Jackson compound. Taking place five years after Season 1, Joel and Ellie have found some stability in Jackson, forging a sense of normalcy in a chaotic world. However, as the trailer quickly makes clear, that peace is short-lived, with numerous threats—including the infected and hostile militant groups—looming on the horizon.
Packed with high-stakes action sequences, the trailer introduces an array of new characters, including Young Mazino as Jesse and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. While details about the plot remain intentionally vague, the tension is palpable, hinting at the expanded scope of the story. Much like Season 1, Season 2 will explore additional narratives beyond the game’s original storyline, featuring more moments with supporting characters like Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac.
Creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann took the stage at Saturday’s SXSW panel alongside stars Bella Ramsey, Pedro Pascal, Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, and Gabriel Luna.

Per the official logline, Season 2 sees Joel and Ellie reckoning with their past, forcing them into conflict with each other and an increasingly treacherous world.
Returning cast members include Pascal and Ramsey, joined by Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. New additions include Isabela Merced as Dina, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara will also make a guest appearance.
